Biography

Iain B. MacDonald is an Irish and English television director and producer. He was born in Southend-on-Sea, Essex, and is a co-creator of the Essex International Film Festival.

He began his career in the early 1990s making arts documentaries, including Gilbert & George: Day Tripping. After winning the Best Short Film Award at the Edinburgh International Film Festival in 2004 for Billy’s Day Out, he moved into television drama, directing UK series such as Bodies, Mansfield Park and Episodes. He received a Primetime Emmy nomination in 2014 for Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series for Episodes.

Since relocating to Los Angeles in 2015, MacDonald has directed multiple episodes of Shameless (17 episodes, 2016–2021) and served as a producer on the series. His other credits include Preacher, Shantaram, Poker Face (director of two episodes and executive producer, 2023), Twisted Metal and Daredevil: Born Again.
