James Fleet is a good supporting actor too often given variations on the same posh fool. We like the kindness he brings to ensemble comedy; the limitation is how often the casting stops there.

James Fleet's fools tend to mean well, which makes a difference to how long we want to spend with them. As Hugo Horton in The Vicar of Dibley (1994), he belongs in a comedy whose village eccentrics are treated with affection. We felt fond of Hugo because Fleet makes the goodwill matter as much as the foolishness. Dawn French supplies the warmth that holds the company together. Fleet fits a programme that can be funny without treating its people as contemptible.
Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994) gave him wider recognition as Tom, the awkward best man. Alongside Hugo, it also helps explain how firmly the posh fool became attached to him. That is a useful comic speciality, but it leaves casting directors with an easy answer before they have asked much of the actor. The familiar jokes in The Vicar of Dibley show the danger: affection keeps us watching, though it cannot make every repetition fresh.
Sense and Sensibility (1995) offers a reminder of his usefulness beyond ensemble comedy. As John Dashwood in Ang Lee's Austen adaptation, he works within a cast whose awkward, recognisable feelings make the film worth recommending even when its surroundings look too comfortable. Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet are the chief reasons to see it, and we would not pretend that Fleet is the main attraction. He is a reliable supporting player in period drama, where an actor still has to find a person beneath the familiar manners. Asked about playing Austen, he put it plainly: "Just try to be a real person I think."
The later parts include John Constable in Mike Leigh's Mr. Turner (2014) and King George III in Bridgerton (2020). Those roles continue his association with period work, without giving us reason to declare some grand reinvention. We would welcome more parts that ask something beyond amiable confusion. Start with The Vicar of Dibley for the comic actor, provided a village's worth of familiar jokes sounds like a pleasant evening.
Biography
James Edward Fleet (born 11 March 1952) is an English actor of theatre, radio and screen. He was born in Bilston, Staffordshire, and trained at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland after studying engineering at university in Aberdeen.
Fleet is known for playing Tom in the film Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994) and John Dashwood in Sense and Sensibility (1995). He portrayed Hugo Horton in the BBC sitcom The Vicar of Dibley (1994–2007) and has played King George III in the Netflix series Bridgerton (2020–) and its spin-off Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story (2023).
He has worked with the Royal Shakespeare Company and is married to actress Jane Booker.
