Biography

Joe Grant was an American conceptual artist, storyboard artist and screenwriter who worked for Walt Disney Animation Studios. He began his career as a caricaturist and was hired by Disney in 1933 to design caricatures for the Mickey Mouse short Mickey's Gala Premiere. He headed the studio's Character Model Department and contributed to early features including character design on Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937).

Grant served as story director on Fantasia (1940) and co-wrote the screenplay for Dumbo (1941) with Dick Huemer. He left the studio in 1949 but returned in 1989 and contributed to later films such as Beauty and the Beast (1991), Aladdin (1992), The Lion King (1994), Pocahontas (1995) and Mulan (1998). He was named a Disney Legend in 1992 and died in 2005 while still working at the studio.
