Biography
John Wood (5 July 1930 – 6 August 2011) was an English actor. He was born in Derbyshire and educated at Bedford School and Jesus College, Oxford. He began his career with the Old Vic and became a prominent member of the Royal Shakespeare Company, where he performed many Shakespearean roles.
Wood was particularly associated with the plays of Tom Stoppard. He won a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play for his performance in Travesties (1976) on Broadway and received further Tony nominations for Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead and Sherlock Holmes. His film roles included Archduke Harry in Orlando (1992), Christopher Riley in Shadowlands (1993) and Thurlow in The Madness of King George (1994), as well as appearances in WarGames (1983), Ladyhawke (1985), The Purple Rose of Cairo (1985), Chocolat (2000) and The Avengers (1998).
