Biography
Julie Bovasso (also credited as Julia Anne Bovasso) was an American actress of stage, screen and television. Born in Brooklyn, New York, on 1 August 1930, she was raised in the Bensonhurst neighbourhood and attended the High School of Music & Art in Manhattan. She died in New York City on 14 September 1991.
In the 1950s she founded the experimental Tempo Playhouse in Manhattan, where she produced, directed and performed works of the Theatre of the Absurd, including the New York premiere of Jean Genet's The Maids, for which she received the first Best Actress Obie Award in 1956. She later won additional Obies, including a triple award in 1970 for her play Gloria and Esperanza.
Her film roles include Flo in Saturday Night Fever (1977) and its sequel Staying Alive (1983), Maureen Rooney in The Verdict (1982), Rita Cappomaggi in Moonstruck (1987), and parts in Wise Guys (1986), Betsy's Wedding (1990) and My Blue Heaven (1990). She also worked as a dialogue coach on several films.
