Juliette Lewis makes volatile characters feel capable of doing something the scene has not prepared for. We value that unpredictability, particularly when the writing is thin, though casting her only for intensity would waste her playfulness.

Juliette Lewis makes Mallory Knox seem capable of disrupting any scene she enters in Natural Born Killers (1994). Oliver Stone surrounds her with people behaving at maximum volume, yet she remains someone worth watching rather than another reason to turn it down. We rate Lewis for that untidy, unpredictable presence. She gives Mallory enough personality to keep us interested even when the writing has reduced the people around her to broad social types.
Her breakthrough came as Danielle Bowden in Cape Fear (1991), and the early films need not all be read through Mallory. Woody Allen's Husbands and Wives (1992) gave her the self-possessed Rain; What's Eating Gilbert Grape (1993) cast her as Becky alongside Johnny Depp and Leonardo DiCaprio. Both are supporting roles, a useful corrective to the idea that Lewis is only there to make trouble.
In Stone's film, Woody Harrelson gives Mickey a self-possession that helps explain why attention settles on him; Lewis makes Mallory the less predictable presence beside him. They give the couple enough personality to survive some thin dialogue. We were worn down by the film's cumulative noise, but the energy between Lewis and Harrelson kept us interested. Victor Kempster's exaggerated production design leaves little sense of ordinary life around them, which makes the actors' success in giving these people something individual all the more valuable.
The reservation is what happens when a film relies on that force without giving her enough to work with. Natural Born Killers keeps repeating its point about celebrity killers, and her commitment cannot supply the explanation that Stone's satire lacks. From Dusk Till Dawn (1996), directed by Robert Rodriguez and written by Quentin Tarantino, continued her work in genre films. Being repeatedly useful to dark stories can make an actor's possibilities look narrower than they are.
Later supporting work in film and television included Yellowjackets (2021–2023). We would welcome more parts that make use of the playfulness as well as the intensity. For Lewis at full force, try Natural Born Killers, allowing for a film that becomes considerably less interesting whenever it turns away from its couple.
Biography
Juliette Lewis is an American actress and singer. Born on 21 June 1973 in Los Angeles, California, she is the daughter of actor Geoffrey Lewis. She began her career in television and made her feature film debut in My Stepmother Is an Alien (1988). Her first major film role was as Audrey Griswold in National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (1989).
Lewis received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress and a Golden Globe nomination for her role in Cape Fear (1991). She appeared as Rain in Woody Allen's Husbands and Wives (1992) and as Mallory Knox in Natural Born Killers (1994), for which she won the Pasinetti Award for Best Actress at the Venice Film Festival. Other credits include What's Eating Gilbert Grape (1993), From Dusk Till Dawn (1996) and Ma (2019). She has also performed as the lead singer of the band Juliette and the Licks.
