Biography

Leigh Whannell is an Australian filmmaker, writer and actor. Born in Melbourne on 17 January 1977, he is best known for co-creating the Saw franchise with director James Wan. He wrote the screenplay for the original Saw (2004) and contributed to several sequels, while also writing Insidious (2010) and Insidious: Chapter 2 (2013), both directed by Wan.

Whannell made his directorial debut with Insidious: Chapter 3 (2015). He has since directed Upgrade (2018), The Invisible Man (2020) and Wolf Man (2025), for which he also wrote the screenplay with Corbett Tuck. He produced and contributed the story to Insidious: The Red Door (2023) and appears in several of the Insidious films as the character Specs.
