Lin Shaye is good at being conspicuous in comedy and quietly convincing in horror. We value the stillness of her Elise Rainier most, but her presence is no guarantee that an Insidious film will frighten.

Magda's sun-damaged skin in There's Something About Mary (1998) leaves little doubt about the kind of comedy we are watching. Lin Shaye commits to hours of make-up and gives the eccentric neighbour the physical and vocal conviction to match. We laughed at Magda because Shaye plays her eccentricity without a flicker of embarrassment. The Farrelly brothers get their biggest laughs from Ben Stiller's discomfort and Cameron Diaz's ease, but Shaye fits the film's cheerful indecency. Its slack middle is hardly a supporting actor's fault.
Her supporting work ran through horror and broad comedy, from A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) to Dumb and Dumber (1994). The Farrellys found a use for her willingness to look peculiar; James Wan's Insidious (2010) gave her quiet intensity a more lasting role. As psychic medium Elise Rainier, she makes the explanations worth listening to through the seriousness with which she delivers them. Insidious: Chapter 3 (2015) expanded the part to co-lead, allowing that stillness more room. This is the Shaye we value most.
By Insidious: The Red Door (2023), the series has become a less reliable recommendation than its recurring actor. Patrick Wilson takes the Lambert family seriously and directs the actors well, but the scares are largely familiar. The MRI sequence frightens; red light and a violin cannot do the same job indefinitely. Shaye appears as Elise, and the circumstances are best left alone. This is a mixed film, and her name in the credits should not be taken as a promise that the series has recovered its invention.
We would like to see that quietness trusted in a substantial part that does not require her to explain a haunting. The comic transformations are enjoyable, but they can make it too easy to remember the make-up and overlook the actor doing the work beneath it. Start with There's Something About Mary for the comedy; do not choose The Red Door solely because she is in it.
Biography
Lin Shaye is an American actress, also credited as Linda Shaye. Born on 12 October 1943 in Detroit, Michigan, she studied art history at the University of Michigan and later earned an MFA in acting from Columbia University School of the Arts. She began her career in New York theatre, appearing in off-Broadway and Broadway productions, before moving to Los Angeles in 1977.
Shaye has appeared in more than a hundred feature films. She is known for her role as Elise Rainier in the Insidious series, including Insidious (2010), Insidious: Chapter 2 (2013), Insidious: Chapter 3 (2015), Insidious: The Last Key (2018) and Insidious: The Red Door (2023). Other credits include A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), Dumb and Dumber (1994), There's Something About Mary (1998) and several Farrelly brothers comedies. She is the sister of film executive Robert Shaye.
