Biography

Leslie Dilley (also credited as Les Dilley) was a Welsh production designer and art director. Born on 11 January 1941 in Rhondda, Glamorgan, Wales, he began his career in the film industry as a plasterer and draughtsman before advancing to art department roles. He died on 20 May 2025.

Dilley received Academy Awards for Best Art Direction for Star Wars (1977) and Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), both shared with Norman Reynolds. He earned further Oscar nominations for art direction on Alien (1979), The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and The Abyss (1989). His production design credits include The Exorcist III (1990), Casper (1995), Deep Impact (1998) and Son of the Mask (2005). He also worked as art director on Superman (1978) and An American Werewolf in London (1981).
