Marc Warren’s expressive eyes and hands make him a natural fit for charming men we have reason to distrust. We value the comic timing as much as the menace; the less persuasive casting asks him to look worn down.

Warren’s eyes and hands are often more interesting than the business of looking threatening. His comic timing is useful here: a morally dubious character need not spend every scene announcing that he is bad news. We rate that liveliness, though repeated villainous casting risks making an expressive actor too easy to predict. The breakthrough in Band of Brothers (2001) was followed by Hustle (2004), where he played the charming con artist Danny Blue.
Paul Abbott’s State of Play (2003), with Warren as Dominic Foy, is an easy recommendation for anyone following his television work. The six-part conspiracy thriller makes the newsroom convincing and gives us an ensemble worth spending time with. The complication is that the story sometimes demands so much attention that we would rather it stopped to let us stay with a character. There are stretches when following the plot becomes less rewarding than watching the actors, which is a fault in the writing and a compliment to the cast.
Life on Mars (2006) gives him the guest role of Tony Crane, while John Simm and Philip Glenister provide the compelling central partnership. We were gripped by the series because its time-travel mystery has consequences that matter to the people caught in it. The police stories and the quarrels can become repetitive, but that is a qualification to a warm recommendation. These two programmes make a useful starting point for Warren’s work, with strong casts around him and stories worth following beyond his own appearances.
His lead role in Van der Valk (2020) is a less convincing fit. The objection that his youthful appearance and manner sit awkwardly with an older, world-weary detective is persuasive; weariness is not what we would first ask him to supply. There is also a danger in treating those expressive eyes as sufficient reason to cast him as another villain. Start with State of Play for the company he keeps, then Hustle for a role that has use for his charm.
Biography
Marc Warren (born 20 March 1967) is an English actor. He was born in Northampton and studied drama at the East 15 Acting School in Essex, leaving before completing the course. He made his professional stage debut in 1986 in Stags and Hens at the Northampton Theatre Royal.
Warren's television roles include Albert Blithe in the miniseries Band of Brothers (2001), Dominic Foy in State of Play (2003), Tony Crane in Life on Mars (2006) and Danny Blue in Hustle (2004–2007). Film credits include Shine (1996), Green Street Hooligans (2005) and Wanted (2008).
