Matt Reeves gives large-scale genre films time to attend to their characters. We rate his patience with actors and his ability to make inherited material feel personal, though the familiar noir styling is less distinctive.

Reeves often holds on a face rather than hurrying to the next piece of action. He favours long takes and carefully chosen angles over collecting every possible view of a scene, and his films gain from giving performances that time. We rate that patience, particularly in films whose familiar titles might promise little beyond repetition. The reservation is that a long, serious look still has to tell us something.
His directing work includes Homicide: Life on the Street (1993), a programme we rate highly for making its detectives as absorbing as their cases. We were occasionally irritated by its restless editing because it distracted from performances, especially Andre Braugher's, that needed no assistance. That is a judgement on the series, not an attempt to credit Reeves with its entire style. His feature debut, The Pallbearer (1996), preceded Felicity (1998–2002), which he co-created with J.J. Abrams. The attention to actors became a defining part of the later genre work.
Cloverfield (2008) brought him wider attention as a director of large-scale genre films; Let Me In (2010) showed how personally he could treat existing material. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014) and War for the Planet of the Apes (2017) gave that approach room to develop across two films within a franchise. The western influence helps explain his movement between intimate close-ups and spectacle. Writer Mark Bomback is among his collaborators, and the emphasis on character gives the large-scale action a purpose beyond keeping everyone occupied.
The Batman (2022) moves towards noir and the look of 1970s detective films, while keeping the action grounded. Reeves's extended takes give the actors room, and his collaborators include cinematographer Greig Fraser. The attention to performance works better for us than the familiar detective-film styling, which does less to distinguish him from his influences. Biography
Matt Reeves is an American filmmaker, director, producer and screenwriter. Born on 27 April 1966 in Rockville Centre, New York, he was raised in Los Angeles and graduated from the University of Southern California.
Reeves began his career writing screenplays for Under Siege 2: Dark Territory (1995) and The Pallbearer (1996), the latter serving as his feature directorial debut. He directed an episode of the series Homicide: Life on the Street (1993) and co-created the drama series Felicity (1998–2002) with J. J. Abrams.
His feature films include Cloverfield (2008), Let Me In (2010), Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014), War for the Planet of the Apes (2017) and The Batman (2022). He is a producer on the forthcoming film Clayface (2026).
