Biography
Mayes C. Rubeo is a Mexican costume designer. Born Mayes Castillero in Mexico City in 1962, she studied at Los Angeles Trade-Tech College and UCLA Extension. After graduating she moved to Italy to work with costume designer Enrico Sabbatini and continues to maintain a workshop there.
Rubeo began her career in the 1980s and 1990s as an assistant and supervisor before becoming a lead designer. Her credits include Apocalypto (2006), Avatar (2009), Thor: Ragnarok (2017), Jojo Rabbit (2019) and WandaVision (2021). She received Academy Award and BAFTA Award nominations for best costume design on Jojo Rabbit, becoming the first Latina nominated in the category. Recent work includes Blue Beetle (2023), Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (2024) and Deadpool & Wolverine (2024).
She was married to Italian production designer Bruno Rubeo until his death in 2011.
