Biography
Pat Hingle (born Martin Patterson Hingle) was an American character actor who appeared in over 200 stage, film and television productions. He was born in Miami, Florida, on 19 July 1924 and died on 3 January 2009 in Carolina Beach, North Carolina.
Hingle trained at the University of Texas and the Actors Studio. He began his screen career with an uncredited role in On the Waterfront (1954) and went on to play authority figures in films including Norma Rae (1979) and three Clint Eastwood pictures. He is best known for portraying Commissioner Jim Gordon in Batman (1989), Batman Returns (1992), Batman Forever (1995) and Batman & Robin (1997).
On stage he appeared in Broadway productions such as Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1955) and J.B. (1958), and received a Tony Award nomination for The Dark at the Top of the Stairs (1957).
