Biography
Patrick Godfrey (13 February 1933 – 4 June 2026) was a British actor of film, television and stage. He was born in Finsbury, London, to the Rev. Frederick Godfrey and Lois Mary Gladys (née Turner). In 1956 he won the Carleton Hobbs Bursary and joined the BBC Radio Drama Company. His film debut was in Miss Julie (1972).
Godfrey appeared in several Merchant-Ivory films, including as the Reverend Mr Eager in A Room with a View (1985) and as Spencer in The Remains of the Day (1993). Other screen roles include Leonardo da Vinci in Ever After (1998), Morrell in The Count of Monte Cristo (2002), Gillenormand in Les Misérables (2012) and the butler in His Dark Materials (2019). He was married to actress Amanda Walker from 1960.
