Biography
Peter Zinner (24 July 1919 – 13 November 2007) was an Austrian-American film editor. Born in Vienna, he studied music there before his family fled Nazi occupation in 1938. He arrived in Los Angeles in 1940 and began working in the film industry as an apprentice editor at 20th Century Fox in the early 1940s, later serving as an assistant sound-effects editor at Universal and a music editor at MGM.
Zinner received his first editing credits in the late 1950s and 1960s on films including The Professionals (1966) and In Cold Blood (1967). He co-edited The Godfather (1972) with William H. Reynolds, handling the latter half of the film, and worked on The Godfather Part II (1974). His other credits include The Deer Hunter (1978), for which he won the Academy Award for Best Film Editing, and An Officer and a Gentleman (1982), for which he received an Oscar nomination. He also won Emmy Awards for television work on War and Remembrance (1988) and Citizen Cohn (1992).
