Biography
Richard M. Powell (15 December 1916 – 20 October 1996) was an American screenwriter and television writer. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, he attended the University of Cincinnati and served in the US Army Entertainment Corps during the Second World War. He began writing for radio in the mid-1940s before moving into television.
Powell contributed scripts to numerous series, including multiple episodes of Hogan's Heroes (often with writing partner Arthur Julian), The Andy Griffith Show, MASH, The Mary Tyler Moore Show and Quincy, M.E.*. He also wrote for feature films and comedy specials. He served as president of the Television Writers branch of the Writers Guild of America in the 1950s and remained active in the guild, receiving its Morgan Cox Award for lifetime service shortly before his death from prostate cancer in Los Angeles.
