Biography
Richard Robbins was an American composer best known for his scores for Merchant Ivory films. Born in South Weymouth, Massachusetts, he trained at the New England Conservatory in Boston and studied in Vienna on a fellowship. He later directed the preparatory school at the Mannes College of Music in New York.
Robbins began his association with producer Ismail Merchant and director James Ivory in the mid-1970s and composed the score for their 1979 film The Europeans. He went on to score nearly all of their subsequent productions, including A Room with a View (1986), Maurice (1987), Howards End (1992) and The Remains of the Day (1993). He received Academy Award nominations for the last two films.
