Emma Thompson makes intelligence audible in the timing of a reply and lets feeling show through the effort to contain it. We like her best with someone capable of answering back, as Ruth Wilson does in Down Cemetery Road.

In Down Cemetery Road (2025), Emma Thompson's blunt delivery makes Ruth Wilson's responses worth watching. As private investigator Zoë Boehm, Thompson has the no-nonsense manner that could let an actor deliver every sharp line and leave everyone else to listen. Wilson does not permit that, and the awkward exchanges are more rewarding than a succession of neatly delivered jokes. We laughed at Thompson's bluntness because Wilson's irritation stopped it becoming a solo routine.
The period dramas made good use of her ability to show someone holding a feeling back. Margaret Schlegel in Howards End (1992) and Miss Kenton in The Remains of the Day (1993), opposite Anthony Hopkins, helped establish that association in the early 1990s. Sense and Sensibility (1995) added her screenplay to her performance as Elinor Dashwood. James Ivory and Ang Lee were apt collaborators for an actor so attentive to what a face or a carefully timed reply can disclose.
The comedy came first, with television work such as Tutti Frutti (1987) preceding the period dramas. Later parts include Sybill Trelawney in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004) and P.L. Travers in Saving Mr. Banks (2013). Her familiar manner can become too conspicuous, a reservation critics have made about her casting. Brief supporting appearances leave less time to get past recognising her.
Down Cemetery Road returns her to a substantial television lead, and the partnership with Wilson gives a conspiracy thriller enough human interest to survive its slower passages. Their humour helps us care about the women caught up in the mystery without making the danger seem unimportant. The plotting sometimes dawdles; their company is appealing, but we would still prefer it to get on with things. The series gives Thompson time to be more than its source of sour jokes. Biography
Dame Emma Thompson is a British actor and screenwriter. Born on 15 April 1959 in Paddington, London, she trained at Newnham College, Cambridge, where she performed with the Footlights, and appeared in the sketch series Alfresco (1983–1984).
She gained early recognition in the BBC series Tutti Frutti and Fortunes of War (both 1987). Thompson is known for roles including Sybill Trelawney in the Harry Potter films (2004–2011), Karen in Love Actually (2003), Mrs Potts in Beauty and the Beast (2017) and the Baroness in Cruella (2021). She has also written screenplays, including for Sense and Sensibility (1995).
In 2025 she played private investigator Zoë Boehm in the Apple TV+ series Down Cemetery Road. Thompson was appointed DBE in 2018.
