Watch Sean Astin watching Elijah Wood in The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003). As Sam, he seems to be checking how much more Frodo can bear, and the attention keeps their affection believable amid the battles. We were moved by those watchful moments because Astin makes concern feel like something Sam has to keep doing, however difficult it becomes. Peter Jackson gives that quiet work time to register against the competing stories. Astin is especially good here at letting stubbornness show through kindness.
His route to Sam took in Mikey in The Goonies (1985), his film debut, and the title role in Rudy (1993). The latter put his earnestness at the centre of an underdog story and gave him the leading role. Jackson’s trilogy (2001–2003) made the loyal companion the defining part of his career. The casting suited an actor frequently given working men, with their everyday labour providing something concrete for him to play. Supporting film and television parts followed, including Bob Newby in Stranger Things (2017), alongside voice work and independent projects.
In The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), his emotional directness helps us care about the people amid so much mythology. Wood gives him a vulnerable Frodo to attend to, while Ian McKellen makes Gandalf’s solemn speech sound like ordinary thought. Astin’s contribution is plainer, and the film needs it. There is a reservation: the hobbits sometimes lose our attention when Viggo Mortensen’s Aragorn and Sean Bean’s Boromir take over.
The risk of such casting is that being dependable becomes all he is asked to play. Sam avoids that trap because Astin allows affection to make him obstinate, and Jackson recognises how much those small reactions contribute. We would welcome more parts that complicate his decency without treating it as something foolish. Give The Return of the King its long evening; just do not expect Jackson to be economical.

Sean Astin, also credited as Sean Patrick Duke, is an American actor. Born on 25 February 1971 in Santa Monica, California, he began his career as a child actor with his film debut as Mikey Walsh in The Goonies (1985).
He is known for his performances as the title character in Rudy (1993) and as Samwise Gamgee in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002) and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003). Other notable roles include Bob Newby in Stranger Things. Astin has also worked as a director and producer, and was elected president of SAG-AFTRA in 2025.
He is the son of actress Patty Duke and actor John Astin, and is married to producer Christine Astin.
