Biography
Sophie Thompson is a British actress born on 20 January 1962 in London. She is the daughter of actors Phyllida Law and Eric Thompson and the younger sister of actress Emma Thompson. She trained at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and made her television debut in 1978 in A Traveller in Time.
Thompson has worked extensively in film, television and theatre. Her film credits include Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994), Emma (1996), Gosford Park (2001) and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 (2010). On television she has appeared in EastEnders, Coronation Street, Sex Education, Silo and as Sheila Seymour in Detectorists (2014–2022). She won the Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Musical in 1999 for Into the Woods and has received six further nominations.
