Biography
Thomas Carter (born 17 July 1953) is an American director, producer and actor. Born in Austin, Texas, he graduated with a BFA in theatre from Texas State University in 1974. He began his career as an actor, appearing in series including The White Shadow (as James 'Hollywood' Hayward) and an episode of Hill Street Blues, before moving into directing.
Carter directed multiple episodes of Hill Street Blues (including nine in total), the pilot of Miami Vice and four episodes of St. Elsewhere. He has also directed pilots for other series and feature films including Swing Kids (1993), Save the Last Dance (2001) and Coach Carter (2005). His television work includes directing and producing on Equal Justice, which he co-created. Carter has received a Directors Guild of America Award and three Primetime Emmy Awards.
