Biography
Tom Smuts is an American television writer and producer. A Pittsburgh native, he holds a BA from the University of Michigan and a JD from Harvard Law School. He worked in media and internet businesses before moving into television writing.
Smuts began as a story editor on The Guardian (2003–2004) and Eyes (2005–2007), and wrote episodes for Law & Order, Close to Home, The Good Wife and Memphis Beat. He joined the writing staff of Mad Men in 2013, contributing two episodes and serving as co-producer and producer through 2015. He later wrote and produced for Timeless (2016–2018), Bosch (2015–2016), The Alienist (2018–2020) and The Last Thing He Told Me (2023–2026).
Smuts has received Writers Guild of America recognition for his work on Mad Men and Emmy nominations as a producer on the series. He is married to producer Meredith Stiehm.
