Fi1m perspective

Wayne Knight is a sharp supporting actor, particularly good at making nervous men funny. His timing serves an ensemble well, though the repeated casting as someone shifty too often tells us what to expect.

In Basic Instinct (1992), Wayne Knight sweats in close-up. The physical discomfort is immediately legible, as it so often is with his nervous supporting characters. He has the comic timing to make that discomfort funny, too. We value how quickly he establishes a character, though repeated casting as someone shifty can do too much of the work for him.

The early film parts, from Dirty Dancing (1987) to Kenneth Branagh's Dead Again (1991), put him to work in supporting roles. In the latter he plays Piccolo Pete, within a romantic mystery whose appetite for melodrama we enjoy more than its overcomplicated storytelling. We would not make that film the starting point for his work. Its storytelling problems matter more than the pleasure of recognising a reliable supporting actor.

Playing Newman in Seinfeld from 1992 and Dennis Nedry, the treacherous computer programmer in Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park (1993), brought him wider recognition. The television ensemble made good use of his ability to play off other actors, while Spielberg's casting followed directly from seeing him in Basic Instinct. That familiarity is also a limitation: we can find ourselves expecting the same behaviour before the next character has done anything.

Animation gives us a better place to start, with John Lasseter's Toy Story 2 (1999), in which Knight voices Al McWhiggin. His voice work lets the comic timing register without the distraction of recognising him from another part. We were moved by this film because the rescue adventure makes the limited time a toy has with a child painfully clear. Knight is part of an ensemble serving a story that remains funny and easy to follow even when it hurts. Start here, then try Seinfeld for the pleasure of watching his timing work against other actors.
