Fi1m perspective

Adam Baldwin makes imposing men funny without taking away their toughness. We rate him most highly in Firefly, where Jayne Cobb has more to offer than the military authority that so often gets Baldwin cast.

Jayne Cobb’s gruffness in Firefly (2002) is part of what makes him funny. Adam Baldwin keeps the tough exterior intact rather than treating it as something to discard when a joke arrives. We laughed at Jayne because the humour comes through a man who still looks capable of making trouble. This is the Baldwin we most enjoy: imposing, but allowed to be more than the person who makes everyone else stand up straight.

In My Bodyguard (1980), he began with a lead role while still a teenager. Stanley Kubrick’s Full Metal Jacket (1987) established his screen presence as Animal Mother. Steady supporting work across film and television followed, with tough men and military figures becoming regular employment. Television became especially important, with Jayne followed by John Casey in Chuck (2007), giving us longer to get acquainted with an actor often employed in supporting parts.

His Major Mitchell in Roland Emmerich’s Independence Day (1996) is a more conventional military supporting part. We like the film’s patient menace and cheerful ensemble, even when its foolish script and excessive patriotism test that goodwill. Baldwin belongs comfortably in that company, though this is not the performance we would choose to explain his appeal. It is useful work in a film whose pleasures are mostly much broader.

Joss Whedon’s science-fiction Western Firefly needs a cast worth spending time with, and Baldwin helps make it one. The humour beneath Jayne’s tough surface contributes to the warmth that makes us recommend the series. Our reservation is the dialogue’s willingness to spoil a serious moment with an easy joke. Baldwin is worth watching for the comedy, but not every gag deserves the interruption.

The limitation is how often the casting returns to the same sort of man. Another military role may suit Baldwin without telling us much more about him, and we prefer work that gives the gruffness some complication. Start with Firefly for Baldwin; save Independence Day for an evening when subtlety is not a requirement.
