Biography
Anna Hill Johnstone (1913–1992) was an American costume designer who worked in theatre, film and television. She began her career on Broadway, with her first full design credit on the 1937 hit Having a Wonderful Time. Her stage work included productions such as A Streetcar Named Desire, Bell, Book and Candle, Tea and Sympathy and The Tender Trap.
Johnstone moved into film in 1948 with Portrait of Jennie. She became known for frequent collaborations with directors Elia Kazan and Sidney Lumet, contributing costumes to films including On the Waterfront (1954), East of Eden (1955), Baby Doll (1956), Fail Safe (1964), The Godfather (1972), Serpico (1973), Dog Day Afternoon (1975) and The Verdict (1982). She received Academy Award nominations for The Godfather and Ragtime (1981). She was posthumously inducted into the Costume Designers Guild Hall of Fame in 2006.
