Betty White lets a sweet expression survive a sharp remark. As Sue Ann Nivens in The Mary Tyler Moore Show (1973), the pleasure is watching how little she needs to change her manner. The delivery stays pleasant while the meaning becomes considerably less so. We rate her most highly in company, where that careful timing gives the other actors something to answer rather than asking them to stand aside.
Her early work included starring in and producing Life with Elizabeth (1952), followed by frequent game- and talk-show appearances through the 1960s. The wholesome manner could become cloying, and sweetness alone was never enough to make these performances interesting. Joining The Mary Tyler Moore Show in 1973 gave that manner a more useful purpose. She could use the same agreeable delivery for a much sharper line.
Mary Tyler Moore makes patience funny; White gives that patience something to contend with. We laughed at Sue Ann because White kept the delivery so civil even when the words were unkind. She understands how a pause or a small alteration of expression can make an ensemble exchange funnier without turning it into a separate performance. Some of the programme's broader jokes show their age, but her control is a good reason to return. She knows how much a line needs and when to leave it alone.
With Rose Nylund in The Golden Girls (1985), she made naivety convincing by playing it straight rather than announcing how funny it was. Alongside Bea Arthur, Rue McClanahan and Estelle Getty, she gave the apparently simple character enough sincerity to matter beyond the next joke. White lets us enjoy a misunderstanding without inviting us to despise the person having it.

We are less interested when a part relies only on the surprise of an older woman saying something rude. That joke needs more than her willingness to tell it. Biography
Betty White (1922–2021) was an American actress and comedian. She began her career in the early years of television and appeared in numerous series and films over eight decades.
She voiced herself in two episodes of The Simpsons (2000 and 2007). White is known for her roles as Sue Ann Nivens in The Mary Tyler Moore Show (1973–1977) and Rose Nylund in The Golden Girls (1985–1992), as well as Elka Ostrovsky in Hot in Cleveland (2010–2015). She also provided voices for Toy Story 4 (2019), The Lorax (2012) and Family Guy (various episodes).
White received eight Emmy Awards and was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame. She hosted game shows including Just Men! (1983) and appeared as a guest on many others.
