Biography
Bruce Spence is a New Zealand-born Australian actor. Born on 17 September 1945 in Auckland, he moved to Australia at the age of 20 and trained at the National Gallery of Victoria Art School before beginning his acting career with the experimental La Mama theatre in Melbourne in 1969.
Spence gained prominence with his role as the Gyro Captain in Mad Max 2 (1981) and later appeared as Jedediah the Pilot in Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985). He has over 100 film and television credits, including Mr Wall in Dark City (1998), the Trainman in The Matrix Revolutions (2003), Tion Medon in Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith (2005), and voice work as Chum in Finding Nemo (2003). He has also worked extensively in Australian theatre with companies including the Sydney Theatre Company.
In 1971 Spence won an AFI Award for Best Actor for his performance in the comedy Stork.
