Biography
Carlo Di Palma (17 April 1925 – 9 July 2004) was an Italian cinematographer. He began working in film in the 1940s as a focus puller on neo-realist productions including Bicycle Thieves (1948) and became a director of photography in the mid-1950s.
He gained international recognition for his colour cinematography on Michelangelo Antonioni’s Red Desert (1964) and Blow-Up (1966). From 1986 to 1997 he served as director of photography on eleven films directed by Woody Allen, among them Hannah and Her Sisters (1986), Husbands and Wives (1992), Manhattan Murder Mystery (1993), Bullets Over Broadway (1994) and Deconstructing Harry (1997). He also directed a small number of features.
Di Palma received four Silver Ribbon awards for best cinematography and a lifetime achievement award from the European Film Awards in 2003.
