Biography

Ed Lauter was an American character actor who appeared in more than 200 film and television productions over a career spanning more than four decades. He was born Edward Matthew Lauter Jr. on 30 October 1938 in Long Beach, New York, and died on 16 October 2013 in Los Angeles.

Lauter often played authority figures or heavies, with notable film roles including Captain Knauer in The Longest Yard (1974), a gas station attendant in Alfred Hitchcock’s Family Plot (1976), and Peppy’s Butler in The Artist (2011). He also appeared in films such as King Kong (1976), True Romance (1993) and Not Another Teen Movie (2001). On television he had recurring roles on ER and guest appearances on series including The X-Files, Grey’s Anatomy and Shameless.
