Biography
Ernest Day (also credited as Ernie Day) was a British cinematographer, camera operator and occasional director. Born in Surrey, he began working in the film industry in the 1940s as a clapper loader and focus puller before becoming a camera operator. He collaborated extensively with David Lean on films including Lawrence of Arabia (1962) and Doctor Zhivago (1965), and worked on Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange (1971) and several James Bond productions.
Day served as director of photography on fourteen feature films. His credits include Revenge of the Pink Panther (1978), A Passage to India (1984) — for which he received Academy Award and BAFTA nominations — and Superman IV: The Quest for Peace (1987). He also directed the theatrical films Green Ice (1981) and Waltz Across Texas (1982), and episodes of television series such as The New Avengers and The Professionals.
He was the brother of director Robert Day and died in Surrey in 2006.
