Biography
Gerry Hambling (14 June 1926 – 5 February 2013) was a British film editor. He began his career as an assistant editor at Pinewood Studios in the late 1940s and worked on a series of British comedies in the 1960s, including several Norman Wisdom films. He also worked as a sound editor before editing commercials and television programmes during a period of reduced feature production in the 1970s.
From 1976 Hambling collaborated extensively with director Alan Parker, editing fourteen of his feature films. His credits include Bugsy Malone (1976), Midnight Express (1978), Fame (1980), Pink Floyd: The Wall (1982), Birdy (1984), Angel Heart (1987), Mississippi Burning (1988), The Commitments (1991) and Evita (1996). He also edited In the Name of the Father (1993) for Jim Sheridan. Hambling received three BAFTA Awards for Best Editing, for Midnight Express, Mississippi Burning and The Commitments, and was nominated six times for the Academy Award for Best Film Editing.
