Biography
Iain Smith is a Scottish film producer. Born in Glasgow on 8 January 1949, he trained at the London School of Film Technique (now the London Film School), graduating in 1971 with a first-class honours diploma.
He began his career in the early 1970s working as an assistant editor, assistant director and production manager on short films, commercials and children's features. After time in London, he returned to Scotland to work (uncredited) on Bill Douglas's My Childhood (1972) for the BFI. In 1976 he co-founded Smith Schorstein Associates Ltd. He later served as production manager on Bertrand Tavernier's Death Watch (1980) and location manager on Hugh Hudson's Chariots of Fire (1981).
Smith line-produced several films for David Puttnam, including Local Hero (1983), The Killing Fields (1984) and The Mission (1986), and produced The Frog Prince (1984). In 1987 he founded Applecross Productions. His later credits include co-producing The Fifth Element (1997), producing Seven Years in Tibet (1997), Alexander (2004), The Fountain (2006), Children of Men (2006), Wanted (2008) and The A-Team (2010), and executive producing Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) and episodes of The Sandman (2022). He received a BAFTA Scotland award for Outstanding Achievement in Film in 2005 and was appointed OBE in 2008.
