Biography
James D. Bissell is an American production designer. Born in Charleston, South Carolina, in 1951, he graduated with a BFA in theatre from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1973. He began his career working on commercials and low-budget features in New York and Los Angeles before serving as art director on the television series Palmerstown, U.S.A., for which he won an Emmy Award in 1980.
Bissell received a BAFTA nomination for his production design on Steven Spielberg's E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982). His subsequent credits include Jumanji (1995), Good Night, and Good Luck (2005), for which he earned an Academy Award nomination, 300 (2006), Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (2011), Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (2015) and The Monuments Men (2014). He has collaborated frequently with director George Clooney and received the Art Directors Guild Lifetime Achievement Award in 2015.
