Julian Rhind-Tutt is particularly good at being funny without looking busy. We recommend him most readily in Green Wing, where his relaxed timing has room to work alongside performers making considerably more fuss.

In Green Wing (2004), Julian Rhind-Tutt's Mac does not have to push to be funny. Stephen Mangan's Guy Secretan makes vanity look exhausting, while Mac seems in no hurry to compete. We laughed at that contrast: Guy's determination to impress makes Rhind-Tutt's ease funnier. In a cast this large, someone who does not insist on the biggest reaction is useful, and Mac never feels lost among the louder characters. There is considerable pleasure in watching an actor trust that we will notice him.
His screen career took time to find a part with that much room. The Duke of York in The Madness of King George (1994) was his first significant screen role, followed by supporting work including The Trench (1999), in which he played 2nd Lt. Ellis Harte. Mac was the breakthrough, in Victoria Pile's hospital comedy. The improvisation used in Green Wing makes sense for him, allowing that timing to develop with the other actors rather than leaving each performer to perfect a separate routine.
Pile's ensemble also gives him Tamsin Greig's Caroline Todd, whose restraint helps keep the more extravagant performances enjoyable. Caroline's embarrassment and Mac's relaxed presence provide welcome changes of pace in a programme that can otherwise work hard at being outrageous. The hour-long format sometimes lets the silliness run beyond its usefulness, and Rhind-Tutt's ease can only do so much for an overlong scene. We recommend the programme with that reservation; the cast makes the indulgence easier to forgive.
In Ron Howard's Rush (2013), he plays Anthony 'Bubbles' Horsley, a supporting role in a drama whose central rivalry is played by Chris Hemsworth and Daniel Brühl. It is a tense, involving film, despite Peter Morgan's tendency to over-explain between races. It offers less opportunity to spend time with Rhind-Tutt than the hospital does. Later work includes Sieyes in Ridley Scott's Napoleon (2023), continuing the pattern of supporting film roles. For his comedy, start with Green Wing, and allow its sillier stretches a little patience.
Biography
Julian Rhind-Tutt is an English actor. He trained at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama after studying English and Theatre Studies at the University of Warwick, and received the Carleton Hobbs Award from BBC Radio Drama in 1992.
He is best known for playing Dr 'Mac' Macartney in the Channel 4 comedy series Green Wing (2004–2006). His other television work includes Keen Eddie, The Hour, Britannia and Banished. Film appearances include Notting Hill (1999), Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001), Rush (2013), Stardust (2007) and Napoleon (2023). He is cast as Friedrich in the forthcoming series Kill Jackie (2026).
