Biography
Ken Watanabe is a Japanese actor. Born on 21 October 1959 in Niigata Prefecture, he moved to Tokyo in 1978 to pursue acting after studying in England. He gained attention through stage work and made his television debut in 1982, achieving breakthrough success in Japan with the 1987 NHK drama series Dokugan ryu Masamune.
Watanabe is known internationally for roles in The Last Samurai (2003), for which he received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor, Letters from Iwo Jima (2006), Inception (2010), and the Godzilla films (2014 and 2019). He has won the Japan Academy Film Prize for Best Actor twice, in 2007 and 2010. He has also appeared in stage productions, including a Broadway revival of The King and I.
His later credits include the television series Tokyo Vice (2022–2024) and the film The Creator (2023), in which he played Harun.
