Biography
Lumsden Hare (also credited as Francis Lumsden Hare or F. Lumsden Hare) was an Irish-born actor who worked in theatre and film. He studied at St. Dunstan's College in London and appeared in more than 35 Broadway productions between 1900 and 1942, making his debut in 1908. He also directed and produced several stage works.
Hare began his film career in 1916 and continued until 1961, appearing in more than 140 films, often in supporting roles as military officers, inspectors or aristocrats. Notable credits include Arrowsmith (1931) as Sir Robert Fairland, Gunga Din (1939) as Major Mitchell, Rebecca (1940) as Tabbs, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1941) as Colonel Weymouth, and Julius Caesar (1953) as Publius. He also made television appearances from the 1950s onwards. He was married to actress Selene Johnson and died in Beverly Hills, California, in 1964.
