Melora Walters makes troubled people feel like individuals in films crowded with unhappiness. We rate her work with Paul Thomas Anderson, above all Magnolia, where she holds our attention even when the film begins to exhaust our sympathy.

In Magnolia (1999), it is worth leaving Tom Cruise behind for a while to spend time with Melora Walters and John C. Reilly. As Claudia Wilson Gator and Officer Jim Kurring, they make loneliness feel personal amid the film’s considerable supply of misery. We were moved by them because they made us care about these particular people, rather than simply acknowledge another pair of unhappy lives. Walters is as important to the film’s appeal as its more conspicuous performers, and Claudia is the part through which we would introduce her. That recommendation comes with a reservation about Paul Thomas Anderson’s film: its repeated demands for sympathy can be tiring.
Her work with Anderson began with Hard Eight (1996), before she played Jessie St. Vincent in Boogie Nights (1997). We recommend the latter film more warmly than Magnolia, for its humour, generosity and care over crowded scenes, even as the rise-and-fall story becomes familiar. Our enthusiasm there is for the ensemble, rather than a reason to put Walters ahead of her colleagues. Magnolia makes her individual contribution clearer, giving her the chance to make one troubled person matter among so many others. Anderson’s films remain the strongest reason for our interest in her, though her work has continued well beyond that collaboration.
Television brought recurring parts as Wanda Henrickson in Big Love (2006–2010) and Kathy Kone in Pen15 (2019–2021), continuing a career often spent in ensembles. Writing and directing Waterlily Jaguar (2018) and Drowning (2019) marked a more substantial change in what she took on. Their psychological and relational concerns suggest a continued interest in the troubled people she has so often played. Our recommendation remains Magnolia, with patience for the people around Claudia as well as Claudia herself. It is a long evening, and not everybody is as easy to stay with.

Melora Walters is an American actress and filmmaker. She was born on 21 October 1959 in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia.
Walters is known for her frequent collaborations with director Paul Thomas Anderson. She played Jessie St. Vincent in Boogie Nights (1997) and Claudia Wilson Gator in Magnolia (1999). Other film credits include Dead Poets Society (1989), Ed Wood (1994), The Butterfly Effect (2004) and Venom (2018). On television she has appeared as Wanda Henrickson in Big Love (2006–2010) and Kathy Kone in PEN15 (2019–2021). She has also directed features including Waterlily Jaguar (2018).
