In Six Feet Under (2001), Michael C. Hall makes David Fisher's restraint look exhausting. An ordinary conversation can seem to demand more effort from him than he has available, yet Hall keeps the performance controlled. We found David's composure quietly painful, because the work of maintaining it is so apparent. Nothing needs to become an outburst for us to understand the strain. We rate Hall for that precision, and for letting us care about a man who can be difficult company.
Alan Ball's series gives that performance room within a family, and the other actors matter. Peter Krause brings ease to Nate Fisher, Frances Conroy makes Ruth's composure look strained, and Lauren Ambrose's impatient Claire interrupts the heavier moods. David's difficulty in company becomes more affecting beside Nate's ease. The programme sometimes indulges its brooding, but these differences between the actors keep the family worth spending time with.
After that television breakthrough, Hall's turn as Dexter Morgan in Dexter (2006) made concealment a more explicit part of his work. Here the controlled exterior belongs to a forensic analyst who is also a serial killer. Hall brings intelligence and a degree of compassion to an extreme point of view; the danger is that another fastidious man with secrets starts to feel like an expected assignment. His returns in Dexter: New Blood (2021) and Dexter: Resurrection (2025) keep him close to that association.
There have been other directions: Richard Dane in the thriller Cold in July (2014), and the title role in the stage production Hedwig and the Angry Inch (2014). Playing Hedwig also puts his singing to work. Those parts are useful reminders of the alternatives to another carefully repressed man. We would welcome a lighter role that lets him use his precision without having to conceal so much. Start with Six Feet Under, allowing for a family whose brooding occasionally tries the patience.
Biography
Michael C. Hall is an American actor. He played David Fisher in the HBO series Six Feet Under (2001–2005) and Dexter Morgan in the Showtime series Dexter (2006–2013). He reprised the latter role in the miniseries Dexter: New Blood (2021) and the series Dexter: Resurrection (2025), and provided the internal monologue for Dexter: Original Sin (2024).
Hall was born in Raleigh, North Carolina. He graduated from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts with an MFA in acting in 1996. His early career was in theatre, with Broadway appearances in Cabaret and Chicago.
For Dexter, Hall won a Golden Globe Award in 2010 and a Screen Actors Guild Award. He has received six Primetime Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series.
