Biography

Stephen Goldblatt is a South African-born British cinematographer. Born on 29 April 1945 in Johannesburg, he moved to London at the age of seven. He trained at the Guildford School of Photography and the Royal College of Art, and began his career in still photography before moving into documentaries, commercials and feature films from the late 1970s.

Goldblatt has worked as director of photography on numerous films including Lethal Weapon (1987) and Lethal Weapon 2 (1989), Batman Forever (1995), Closer (2004), Julie & Julia (2009), The Help (2011), The Intern (2015) and Ava (2020). He has collaborated with directors such as Richard Donner, Joel Schumacher, Mike Nichols and Tate Taylor. He received two Academy Award nominations and three Primetime Emmy nominations, and was awarded a lifetime achievement honour at Camerimage in 2007. He is a member of the American Society of Cinematographers and the British Society of Cinematographers.
