Tom McCarthy is at his best when he lets awkward people take their time with one another. We rate his patient work with actors; we are less persuaded when his writing hurries them towards friendship.

In The Station Agent (2003), Peter Dinklage makes Finbar McBride’s silence seem like a decision the others ought to respect. Tom McCarthy lets him take his time, even when the people around him would prefer a conversation. We laughed at Fin’s resistance, then felt protective of him as their friendliness became another demand. The comedy works because McCarthy never assumes that joining in is good for everyone. We recommend the film for that patience, though he does not always maintain it.
It was his feature debut as writer-director. The Visitor (2007) followed, exploring connections across cultural lines, while Win Win (2011) stayed with small-town moral dilemmas. Across these early films, ordinary people’s difficulties give him enough to build a drama. His preference is to stay close to the actors and let relationships develop without much directorial fuss, allowing the conversation and the performances to carry the scenes.
In Spotlight (2015), his interest in groups moves into investigative journalism. He makes room for the tedium of the job and gets dramatic pressure from people working together. The procedural holds attention without much stylistic display, though the lack of visual flair is a fair reservation.
That dependence on actors is easy to see in The Station Agent, where Dinklage, Bobby Cannavale and Patricia Clarkson preserve an awkwardness the writing sometimes threatens to smooth away. McCarthy allows a silence to last, but he also arranges encounters a little too conveniently. In later passages he presses the warmth harder than the actors need, making the progress towards friendship easier to predict. We would happily spend longer watching this cast hesitate, without another helpful nudge from the plot.
The reason to begin there is Dinklage’s ability to make solitude seem reasonable. McCarthy does not ask us to think Fin needs correcting simply because he would rather be alone. Company becomes appealing when nobody has to explain themselves, and those undemanding passages earn the warmth. Start with The Station Agent for the actors, and allow it a few over-arranged introductions.

Tom McCarthy is an American actor, screenwriter and director. Born on 7 June 1966 in New Providence, New Jersey, he began his career appearing in films such as Meet the Parents (2000) and television series including The Wire (2002) and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (1999).
McCarthy made his directorial and screenwriting debut with the 2003 film The Station Agent. He later wrote and directed The Visitor (2007), Win Win (2011) and Spotlight (2015). He has also acted in films including Pixels (2015) and Little Fockers (2010), and directed episodes of the series 13 Reasons Why (2017).
