Tommy Flanagan is often cast as the hard man; Ratcatcher shows why he deserves more than the shorthand. We rate his ability to make a troubled father believable without making him easy to explain.

In Ratcatcher (1999), Tommy Flanagan's Da helps make family life untidy enough to believe. With Mandy Matthews as Ma, he keeps the troubles at home from acquiring one neat explanation. William Eadie's James is difficult to read, and the adults around him do not make that task much easier. We found this household unsettling because Flanagan and Matthews make its difficulties feel ordinary rather than arranged for our sympathy. That matters in a film which could so easily have reduced its people to their hardships.
His wider reputation rests more heavily on tough men and supporting parts. His first significant film role was Morrison in Braveheart (1995), followed by supporting work including Cicero in Gladiator (2000). Hollywood supporting roles continued through the 2000s, and playing Filip “Chibs” Telford in Sons of Anarchy (2008–2014) brought him broader recognition. That shift matters: a long-running television role can become what an audience expects an actor to do every time.
The strong Glasgow accent he retains in many roles is another part of his recognisability. It initially caused comprehension difficulties for some colleagues and viewers of Sons of Anarchy, so there is a practical limit to treating that distinctiveness as an automatic virtue. We would not ask him to smooth it away, but neither is it a substitute for giving each character something particular to do. Casting him as another hard man needs to involve more than trusting that he will look and sound the part.
Ratcatcher gives us good reason to want more such parts for him. Lynne Ramsay's attention stays with the children, allowing them to be funny, awkward and casually cruel, and Flanagan is useful precisely because he does not compete with that. The film sometimes makes James's troubles feel too neatly arranged, a reservation about the storytelling which the believable family performances cannot entirely remove. Start with Ramsay's film, provided an unsettling childhood drama is what the evening can bear.
Biography
Tommy Flanagan is a Scottish actor. He was born in Glasgow on 3 July 1965 and began his career in theatre with the Raindog Theatre Company in his home city.
Flanagan made his screen debut in the BBC series Screen One and the ITV series Taggart before his film breakthrough as Morrison in Braveheart (1995). He played Da in Lynne Ramsay's Ratcatcher (1999) and Cicero in Gladiator (2000). He is best known for portraying Filip "Chibs" Telford in the FX series Sons of Anarchy (2008–2014) and its spin-off Mayans M.C. (2019). Other credits include Sin City (2005), AVP: Alien vs. Predator (2004) and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017).
