Biography
Ann Doran (also credited as Ann Lee Doran) was an American character actress. Born in Amarillo, Texas, on 28 July 1911, she began her career in silent films as a child and appeared in more than 500 motion pictures and 1,000 television episodes until the late 1980s.
She is best known for playing Carol Stark, the mother of James Dean's character, in Rebel Without a Cause (1955). Other notable film roles include appearances in Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939), His Girl Friday (1940) and You Can't Take It with You (1938), often in uncredited or supporting parts. On television she appeared in series such as The A-Team, Little House on the Prairie, MASH and Bewitched*.
An early member of the Screen Actors Guild, Doran served as an officer and on its pension and health board. She also served for 30 years on the board of the Motion Picture & Television Fund. She died in Carmichael, California, on 19 September 2000.
