Biography
Arthur Max is an American production designer. Born in Manhattan, New York City, he began his career as a stage lighting designer in the music industry in the late 1960s, working on events including the Woodstock festival and tours for Pink Floyd.
After studying architecture in England, where he earned degrees from the Polytechnic of Central London and the Royal College of Art, Max entered the film industry as an assistant to production designers in the mid-1980s. He later worked on television commercials before becoming a feature film production designer, collaborating frequently with directors Ridley Scott and David Fincher.
He is known for his work on Se7en (1995), Gladiator (2000), Black Hawk Down (2001), American Gangster (2007), Prometheus (2012), The Martian (2015), Napoleon (2023) and Gladiator II (2024). Max has received four Academy Award nominations for production design.
