Biography
Beulah Bondi (born Beulah Bondy) was an American character actress whose career spanned stage, film and television from the late 19th century until the 1970s. She began performing as a child and made her Broadway debut in 1925. Her film debut came in 1931 with Street Scene, and she appeared in numerous supporting roles throughout the 1930s and 1940s.
Bondi was twice nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, for The Gorgeous Hussy (1936) and Of Human Hearts (1938). She played the mother of James Stewart in four films, including Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939) and It's a Wonderful Life (1946), and appeared in Make Way for Tomorrow (1937), Remember the Night (1940), Penny Serenade (1941), The Snake Pit (1948) and The Furies (1950). In 1976 she won an Emmy Award for a guest role on The Waltons.
