Biography
David Crank is an American production designer and art director. He grew up in Richmond, Virginia, graduated from the College of William & Mary with a degree in studio art in 1982, and received an MFA in theatre design from Carnegie Mellon University. He began his career designing scenery and costumes for local theatre before working in film as a set painter around 1990.
His production design credits include Knives Out (2019), News of the World (2020), Greyhound (2020), Inherent Vice (2014) and The Master (2012). As an art director he contributed to There Will Be Blood (2007), Lincoln (2012), The Tree of Life (2011) and Water for Elephants (2011). He has worked with directors including Paul Thomas Anderson, Terrence Malick, Rian Johnson and Paul Greengrass.
Crank received an Academy Award nomination for best production design for News of the World (shared with set decorator Elizabeth Keenan) and an Emmy Award for the miniseries John Adams. He was also nominated for BAFTA and Art Directors Guild awards.
