David Mandel is good at letting an ensemble turn a small disagreement into a painful comedy. We recommend his television work for its timing and its ear for selfishness, though repeated quarrels are better taken in small doses.

An everyday disagreement in Curb Your Enthusiasm (2000) lasts longer than good manners ought to allow. Larry David keeps talking, and the supporting cast know precisely when not to stop him. We laughed at how long they let a minor dispute continue, well past the point when anyone sensible would stop. David Mandel's direction suits that approach: overlapping dialogue and documentary-style shooting keep the exchanges feeling unsettled rather than tidily arranged. There is room for the actors to interrupt one another without the scene losing its way.
Our warmest recommendation is Seinfeld (1989), where Mandel wrote and produced during the final three seasons, from 1995 to 1998. He wrote 'The Bizarro Jerry', but the programme's plotting and ensemble playing cannot sensibly be credited to one contributor. Alec Berg and Jeff Schaffer have frequently worked with him on scripts for Seinfeld, Curb Your Enthusiasm and features. His writing credit on The Simpsons (1989) belongs in that account of collaborative comedy. We value that programme's tenderness towards its fools as much as its merciless jokes, a useful reminder that comedy this sharp need not become contemptuous.
The move into features included EuroTrip (2004), which he co-wrote and co-directed without a directing credit. We would still start with the television ensembles, where his attention to overlapping speech has more bearing on what we enjoy about the work. Taking over Veep as showrunner for its final three seasons, from 2016 to 2019, gave him broader responsibility than contributing scripts or directing individual episodes. Its sharp workplace satire was a natural fit for someone practised in comedy about people behaving selfishly. The change was in how much of the programme he oversaw, rather than a departure from ensemble comedy.
Directing the miniseries White House Plumbers (2023) extended his work into another format. Our clearest reason to recommend him remains the handling of everyday friction in Curb Your Enthusiasm. The caveat matters: its quarrels can become wearing, however well the cast judge their timing. Leave a gap before the next episode.
Biography
David Mandel is an American writer, producer and director. He graduated from Harvard University in 1992, where he contributed to the Harvard Lampoon, and began his career writing for Saturday Night Live.
He wrote for Seinfeld during its seventh, eighth and ninth seasons (1995–1998) and for The Simpsons (2012). Mandel served as executive producer, director and writer on Curb Your Enthusiasm (2005–2011) and as showrunner and executive producer on Veep (2012–2019). His other credits include co-writing EuroTrip (2004), The Dictator (2012) and The Cat in the Hat (2003).
