Dominic Monaghan gives an ensemble warmth without demanding that it stop for him. We rate his work as Merry and Charlie Pace; the smaller franchise parts leave us less certain about what he might carry alone.

Merry is useful company when Peter Jackson's fantasy becomes crowded with battles. Dominic Monaghan plays Merry in The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003). Elijah Wood and Sean Astin keep the vast battles from taking over, but Monaghan earns his place beside them. His grounded supporting work helps the large ensemble hold together. The film runs long in places; its problems do not come from the casting.
The move from Geoffrey Shawcross in Hetty Wainthropp Investigates (1996) to Merry in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) brought international recognition. Jackson's trilogy also placed him alongside Billy Boyd, his fellow actor and writing partner. More offers for fantasy creatures followed, and Monaghan worked to escape that narrow casting. We would be wary of treating those offers as a fair measure of his abilities: Lost gave him a better chance to complicate the likeable supporting figure.
In Lost (2004), Charlie Pace is a former rock musician among survivors, and Monaghan makes him matter within a crowded cast. We cared about Charlie because the warmth of the performance gave us a person to follow when the mysteries threatened to become the whole attraction. Monaghan's emotional depth suits a series whose ensemble repeatedly keeps its wayward storytelling watchable. That does not excuse the habit of postponing answers, which can grow wearing. It does explain why the next question is easier to tolerate when we still care who is asking it.
The later parts in X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009) and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019) are supporting appearances in further franchises. Independent work such as Pet (2016) has offered another direction, but his career has remained largely an ensemble one. We would welcome another television role with as much room as Charlie. Start with Lost, if affection for its cast can carry you through the delays.

Dominic Bernard Patrick Luke Monaghan is a British-Irish actor. He was born on 8 December 1976 in West Berlin, West Germany, to British parents, and moved with his family to England at the age of eleven. He attended St Anne’s Roman Catholic High School and Aquinas College in the Stockport area, and joined the Manchester Youth Theatre.
Monaghan is best known for playing Meriadoc "Merry" Brandybuck in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings film trilogy (2001–2003) and Charlie Pace in the television series Lost (2004–2010). His other credits include roles in Hetty Wainthropp Investigates (1996–1998), X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009) and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019). He has also hosted the nature series Wild Things with Dominic Monaghan (2012–2016).
