Biography

Herman F. Zimmerman (born 19 April 1935) is an American art director and production designer. He studied acting and directing at Northwestern University before changing to theatre production, later serving as associate professor of drama and technical director there. He began his professional career in 1965 as an assistant art director at NBC on Days of Our Lives.

Zimmerman worked extensively on the Star Trek franchise. He served as production designer on the first season of Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987–1988), all of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993–1999) and Star Trek: Enterprise (2001–2005), and six feature films: Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989), Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1991), Star Trek: Generations (1994), Star Trek: First Contact (1996), Star Trek: Insurrection (1998) and Star Trek: Nemesis (2002). Other credits include Better Off Dead... (1985) and Black Rain (1989).

He received four Emmy nominations for his work on Deep Space Nine and won an Art Directors Guild Excellence in Production Design Award for the series in 1997. He was later honoured with the guild's Lifetime Achievement Award.
