Biography

Janty Yates is a British costume designer for film and television. Born in London in 1950, she began in the fashion industry and entered film work in the wardrobe department on Quest for Fire (1981). Her first credited role as costume designer was on the 1993 comedy Bad Behavior.

Yates is a frequent collaborator with director Ridley Scott, having worked with him on more than a dozen films. These include Gladiator (2000), for which she won the Academy Award for Best Costume Design, Prometheus (2012), The Martian (2015), Napoleon (2023) and Gladiator II (2024). She received an Academy Award nomination for her work on Napoleon.

In 2006 she was invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. She has also received BAFTA, Satellite and other nominations for her costume design.
