Biography
John Erman (1935–2021) was an American television director, producer and actor. Born in Hyde Park, Chicago, he began his career with small acting roles before moving into casting and then directing in the early 1960s.
He directed episodes of numerous series including The Fugitive (1963), The Outer Limits (1963), Star Trek (1966), MASH (1972) and The Bob Newhart Show (1972). Erman also directed multiple instalments of the miniseries Roots (1977) and its sequel Roots: The Next Generations* (1979).
Among his television films are Who Will Love My Children? (1983), for which he won a Primetime Emmy Award, and An Early Frost (1985). He received two Directors Guild of America Awards, for Roots and An Early Frost.
